DIY: Grapevine Heart Valentine Garland

Make your own designer grapevine heart chain garland without the high price.

I saw the most darling and delicate garland at a certain store (ahem... starts with a T and ends with errain), but decided I didn't like the price tag. So, I created my own. Hope this gets your wheels turning!

Step #1 - Gather your products

So this is where you really get to be creative! I looked at two different heart versions and decided to go with these rattan ones. However, I really loved these and they are very similar to the designer version mentioned above. Then I found some darling pink and white candy striped ribbon. This ribbon is really the absolute perfect shade of pink. If I were using these grapevine hearts, I think I would have just used a simple jute to tie together.

Materials cost me about $35 compared to the $48.00 designer version. The majority of the cost was ribbon, I have tons left over and could have done without some of it. So, if you want to save even more, use ribbon you have or a basic 3/8" pink ribbon like this.

Step #2 - Put it together

For my version, I cut a very long piece of ribbon, about 2-3 feet wider than my mantle to allow for a swag or drape and some on the end to hang down. Cut a sharp angle along one side of the ribbon to create a pointed edge to allow for an easier time looping through. String each heart onto the ribbon in about the same spot on the outside edge, make sure your ribbon stays flat so the hearts don't get twisted up. See my video.

Now, if I were using the second option at this point, I would cute 3 inch pieces of jute or twine and attach hearts to each other using a small knot. Make sure to trim the ends.

Step #3 - Hang your garland & embellish!

Now for the fun part! Initially I hung my banner by itself with some of the three types of ribbon I ordered along each side. I decided it needed a little more zhuzh. So I ended up adding some other garlands to take it up a notch.
